Most of my time is spent chasing DX on the HF bands.  Mostly SSB, but lately I have been active on CW, RTTY and other digital modes.  I am on during most major contests, but I primarily use contests to pick up new band and mode countries.  My overall country total is at 318.  I have been awarded 5B DXCC (with endorsement for 17 m), 5B WAZ, WPX, and WAE-I.  Occasionally I operate HF mobile, and enjoy operating portable when camping. I have served as Vice-President (2004) and President (2005) of the Texas DX Society.

My interest in radio started in the mid 60's listening to my father's Hallicrafters Sky Buddy shortwave receiver.  I logged many shortwave stations, and enjoyed receiving SWL QSL cards and related propaganda.  In 1970, I joined a Boy Scout Ham Radio group and earned my novice ticket.  I held novice callsigns WN2OGQ and WN5CSC.  I made quite a few QSOs as a novice, but never upgraded.  After graduating Texas A&M, and quite a period of inactivity, in 1979, I obtained my advanced class license and was issued KC5AK.  In 1994 I upgraded to Extra, and in 1998 obtained my current callsign N5DD.  While in high school someone gave me an old Teletype machine that I enjoyed tinkering with.  In recent years I have reestablished my interest in RTTY and other digital modes, and last year in CW as well.  I have had the opportunity to operate from several DX entities including Montserrat in 1994 as VP2MCU; Grenada, in 1997 as J38DD, and during CQ WW SSB as part of the J3A team; Turks and Caicos in 2001 as VP5/N5DD; Belize in 2004 as V31AD; and Malta in 2006 as 9H3RY.

I work in Information Technology, for an energy products handling company.  My XYL, Amy, is also licensed (KC5DJI) and is a high school teacher.  I don’t get much time for other hobbies (beside ham radio) but when I do I also enjoy woodworking and automotive tinkering.
